For organists who prefer to play without pedals, this extensive collection pro-vides a wealth of works consisting solely of music originally written on two staves and intended for manuals alone.
Highlights include Johann Sebastian Bach's Partite Diverse, "0 Gott, du Frommer Gott!"," one of Brahms' swan songs, Blest Are Ye Faithful Souls, written during his final year; Prelude on a Chorale by Thomas Tallis, a tribute to Tallis' Canon by the eminent British organist W. T. Best; Buxtehude's Fugue in C," the charming Four Pieces for Flute Clocks, written by Haydn for his era's popular musical clocks; Lefebure-Wely's Fantaisie, based on four themes from The Magic Flute; and Pachelbel's beloved Canon in D. Other featured composers include Elgar, Dupre, Beethoven, Frescobaldi, Handel, Liszt, Couperin, and Franck. An infor-mative selection of notes on the music by editor Rollin Smith provides back-ground for each piece.
This volume's predecessor, Organ Music for Manuals Only, was greeted with praise by The American Organist Magazine, which noted that "Dover Publications has become an indispensable preservator of the cultural heritage through its longstanding specialization in the production of high-quality yet affordable historical reprint editions such as these."
